All international students are required to have insurance while studying in New Zealand.
The New Zealand Government’s Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students requires all international students to have appropriate insurance during their period of study. ELA’s responsibility under the Code is to ensure all enrolled students have a compliant insurance policy during their enrolment and for the duration of their student visa. Read about the Code of Practice.
The English Language Academy uses Allianz Global Assistance NZ Ltd as its preferred insurance provider. Enrolled students will be charged Allianz’s Studentsafe University insurance premium when enrolment is completed. The Allianz Studentsafe University insurance fee must be paid unless ELA approves the use of an alternative insurance provider. You are required to have approved insurance for the duration of your study, regardless of the type of visa you have (please see below for full list of approved insurance providers). Your insurance cover is automatically renewed when you re-enrol in a course.
University of Auckland students are covered under the Studentsafe Inbound University policy by Allianz Partners. When your enrolment at ELA is completed, your insurance is activated. Your travel cover begins up to 31 days before the start of your course. Full cover beings when you leave your home country to travel to New Zealand. Your our cover ends when you return to your home country, or if you hold a student visa, on the expiry of your student visa, whichever is the earlier. Your insurance policy details are:
Policy Number: ELA student ID number (this is on your ID card)
Policy Name/type: Studentsafe Inbound University
Insurance Company: Allianz Partners

If you have an insurance policy that is compliant with the requirements of the New Zealand Government’s Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, you will need to submit evidence of compliant insurance cover to qualify for an insurance fee waiver. ELA has a list of insurance policies deemed compliant with the Code of Practice. If your policy is on this list, you must submit your insurance certificate to enrolment@ela.auckland.ac.nz before you arrive in New Zealand.
Non-compliant insurance policies
If your policy is not included on the list of compliant insurance policies HERE, it will not be accepted and you will be charged for the Allianz Studentsafe-University policy.
The English Language Academy strongly advises that students secure their own adequate insurance to cover any travel they plan to take before and after their enrolment ends. Please note that returning students are covered for a maximum of 31 days for temporary visits to Australia, Bali, Lombok and the Islands of the South Pacific and return to New Zealand. All other students are covered for a maximum of 16 days for temporary visits to Australia, Bali, Lombok and the Islands of the South Pacific and return to New Zealand during the period of insurance.
